Civil Guard warning to all of Spain: This is the "most important thing" you should do if you see an accident on the road.

The Civil Guard has issued an important warning via Twitter to drivers across the country about how they should act when witnessing a traffic accident, emphasizing the importance of remaining calm and prioritizing safety, both your own and that of others. "In the event of an accident, do not rush to the aid of the victims. The first thing is to alert other road users to prevent other vehicles from being involved. The most important thing is your safety and that of other road users," the Civil Guard stated.

Correct action can make all the difference How to act in the event of an accident?

The message, accompanied by a detailed infographic, explains the three fundamental steps that accident witnesses should follow: protect, warn, and assist, known as the PAS method. These tips not only aim to save lives but also prevent additional risks for those involved and those near the accident.

Protection is the first step. The Civil Guard recommends parking your vehicle safely and putting on a reflective vest before leaving the car. "Do not remain on the road or approach a burning vehicle or if you notice it transporting dangerous goods," the police force emphasizes. It is also essential to mark the accident area by placing warning triangles and turning on the hazard lights.

The next step is to report the incident. The Civil Guard advises calling 112 and providing detailed information about the location, the number of injured, and the nature of the accident. Specify any trapped persons, fire hazards, or any other significant risks. "Wait for the dispatcher to give the OK before hanging up," they remind you.

Finally, rescue operations must be carried out with extreme caution to avoid worsening the condition of the injured. The Civil Guard warns that, in general, the injured should not be moved or removed from the vehicle unless absolutely necessary to avoid greater danger. Furthermore, it is important not to remove the rider's helmet or give them drinks or medication.

It's important to remember that correct action in the event of an accident can mean the difference between life and death, so the Civil Guard urges all drivers to learn these steps if they don't already know them, and to follow them responsibly and prudently.
